Canadian Serviceberry  (Juneberry, Saskatoon Berries)

 

 It is a deciduous shrub or small tree, the leaves are simple, round or oval, dark green, light green, in autumn yellow-red or dark red. Fruit-Apple shaped, blue or dark purple Berry diameter 10-15 mm, sweet and edible.

Saskatoon - grows well in sunny, well-lit areas. It grows in a variety of soils, even in dry, sandy and rocky areas, easy to grow in very acid soils. The plant tolerates drought, also for plants characterized by high frost resistance up to -50 with. During the spring frosts can withstand temperatures up to -7 with.  Saskatoon differs early and abundant yield and rapid growth..  At the age of 2-4 years plant provides the first fruits.

The plant reaches full capacity in 8 years. According to various sources, the life expectancy of the plants is 45-70 years. The fruit can ripen at the end of July, beginning of August, the fruits are oval-shaped, dark blue and purple color, medium soft fruit, pulp is juicy, tasty and aromatic. The fruits do not ripen at the same time, so the collection takes place in several stages. Saskatoon is different each year stable yields, in the shadeis lower yields.

The fruit can contain 17-23% dry matter, 12% sugar, 12-40 mg/% of vitamin C, 1 mg/% pro-vitamin A (beta-carotene) in a large number of vitamin-R which enhances the status of the circulatory system, anthocyanin  -500 -1600 mg/% -150 -220,  catechins,  flavonols, vitamin B -155 -50 -12 mg%,-0.8% tannins, pectin-1, 5-3%. Sugar meets with cellulose, pectin and microelements. The fruit can be eaten as fresh or after processing.

From fruits can prepare: juices, jams, preserves, jelly, wine and dried fruits.
